Grateful Dead And Nixon Collaborate On Limited Edition Collection Of Bags, Watches, And Watchbands

November 23, 2021

CARLSBAD, Calif., (Holiday, 2021) – The dead is in the details, and that holds true for the new collaboration between the Grateful Dead and Nixon. To close out 2021, the two have joined forces to create a limited-edition collection of timepieces, bags, and replacement watchbands using the band’s iconic art. The first installment in the collaboration of efforts incorporates quintessential Grateful Dead imagery into seven watches and five watchbands.

The recent release of watches and watch-bands found respect and pickup from Dead Heads around the globe. Praise for the depth of texture and intricate customization applied to each timepiece has become traditional reaction to this very untraditional collaboration. And that was only the first wave of reactions.

The new collaboration leans heavily on Nixon’s push to craft more sustainable and environmentally friendly products, aligning with the Grateful Dead’s long history of supporting environmental causes since the 1970s.

The new Grateful Dead Light Wave is a solar-powered analog-style watch that incorporates #tide® brand recycled ocean plastic into both the watch band and case. Each Light-Wave takes two ocean-bound plastic bottles out of circulation while at the same time eliminating the toxic effects discarded batteries can have on the environment. Nixon was the first brand to create a solar analog watch using #tide ocean plastic, and this new Grateful Dead version will allow Dead Heads to operate on a higher frequency of style.

When it arrives at retail in Dec. 10, 2021, the Grateful Dead Nixon collection of carry items will include a backpack, convertible duffel bag, beverage sling, and other uniquely designed items made from REPREVE® Our Ocean™ performance fibers. Similar to #tide, REPREVE Our Ocean fiber is created from ocean-bound plastic bottles, and Nixon was the first brand in the U.S. to launch a line of bags using this material when it began incorporating them into its bag collection in 2021. The environmental consideration of the collaboration continues with multiple quick-release, and NATO replacement watch bands made using recycled plastic fibers.

The new collection includes:

Grateful Dead Diplomatic ($1,500): An automatic infused with psychedelic details that defy standards and raise the odds. The 13-point bolt hour hand works in sync with a steadily sweeping seconds hand around the custom Grateful Dead numerical indices framing its 46mm case.

The three 3D Steal Your Face subdials are individually applied to the custom etched psychedelic texture on the face to create a six-hand chronograph enclosed in a 42mm case. Grateful Dead Sentry Stainless Steel ($300): Black tie meets music festival. A 3D Steal Your Face skull applied on top of the indices pops on an etched texture. A 42mm case dances on your wrist without overpowering the party.

This eco-friendly watch combines progressive design with solar charging and recycled #tide brand ocean plastic construction, making it a clean, red, and blue time-telling machine. About the Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead is a social and musical phenomenon that grew into a genuine American treasure. In 1965, an entire generation was linked together by common ideals, gathering by the hundreds and thousands. This movement created a seamless connection between the band and its fans. As the band toured, Dead Heads would follow. Not because it was a part of popular culture, but because it is a true counterculture that exists to this very day-one that earnestly believes in the value of its beliefs. By 1995, the Grateful Dead had attracted the most concert goers in the history of the music business, and today remain one of the all-time leaders in concert ticket sales. Eventually, the caravan evolved into a community with various artists, craftsmen and entrepreneurs supplying a growing demand for merchandise that connected them to the music. Today, the connection is as strong as ever. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994 and received a Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Their final tally of 2,318 total concerts remains a world record. The Grateful Dead recently celebrated their 50th top 40 album on the Billboard chart, a feat no other group has achieved.
