New Film “ZANA” Captures the Voices of Women in Cycling and Media

Funded by the “State Bicycle Co. Presents” Grant Program, film explores the voices of women through one team’s experiences at iconic Little 500 race

PHOENIX – October 17, 2024 /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – State Bicycle Co. is thrilled to announce the release of “ZANA,” the second film released under the brand’s State Bicycle Co. Presents Grant Program. Filmmakers Grace Williams and Emily Segura Maze made “ZANA” to shine a spotlight on the women in the cycling world through the journey of a women’s team.

Through a lens both personal and poignant, the first-time filmmakers capture the remarkable story of Team Melanzana, a women’s cycling team of which Williams was a prominent member. They recall the team’s storied history at the iconic Little 500 at Indiana University—immortalized in the 80’s film “Breaking Away”—with a focus on the 2024 pursuit of a third consecutive victory. This story is also a tool through which Williams and Segura Maze explore the broader themes of gender equality and female empowerment within the traditionally male-dominated world of competitive cycling.

“Our goal with this film was to spotlight the incredible women in the cycling community and beyond,” said Williams. “We wanted to capture not only the challenges and victories of ZANA but also the broader fight for gender equality that resonates across all industries.”

Segura Maze adds, “This film is as much about the journey of women in cycling as it is about our own journey as filmmakers. It’s about showing that success comes in many forms and that the pursuit of one’s passion can inspire others to do the same.”

“ZANA” is more than just a documentary; it’s a call to action. It underscores the importance of camaraderie, perseverance, and the courage to push boundaries. By highlighting the achievements and struggles of women in a historically male-dominated sport, the film aims to inspire a new generation of women to bravely pursue their own dreams.

The State Bicycle Co. Presents grant program was introduced by State to support independent filmmakers and cycling, helping bring unique cycling stories to life by providing funding and equipment for three to five films each year. The program celebrates the ethos of exploration, community and the thrill of pushing boundaries, reflecting the values of the State Bicycle Co. brand.
