PAKA’s entire product line features a certificate to follow sourcing from its roots in Peru.
Boulder, CO (November 22, 2024) /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ — PAKA, the sustainable apparel brand best known for its performance-based alpaca fiber gear, is proud to announce the expansion of its Traceable Alpaca Program to its full product line. Each PAKA product now features a QR code on its hangtag that links consumers directly to the precise coordinates where the alpaca fiber is sourced. This program brings unprecedented transparency to the apparel industry, showcasing the artistry, sustainability, and impact woven into every piece.
Since its founding, PAKA has been dedicated to connecting consumers with the journey behind their clothing. This commitment inspired the launch of the Traceable Alpaca pilot program in 2022, debuting with the brand’s flagship Hoodie. Over the past two years, PAKA has worked to catalog the sourcing of all fibers in a digital database, enabling traceable alpaca fibers across its entire product line. This program deepens PAKA’s commitment to transparency and honors the Andean communities that make its products possible.
“PAKA started in the Andes Mountains, where alpacas have evolved alongside the local alpaqueros for thousands of years,” commented PAKA’s Director of Peru and Impact, Gisella Garate. “When we began, there was no supply chain set up. Everything here in the alpaca industry is small scale, with herds of 60-90 alpacas free-roaming in the rural Andes at 15,000+ feet. So, we had to build this bridge ourselves to trace the alpaca fiber in your clothing all the way from the fiber to the garment that arrives at your doorstep.”
The QR code on each product links customers to a map pinpointing where the fiber in the garment came from and its corresponding alpaca herd in the Andes. Each purchase also includes an Origin Certificate, developed in partnership with its yarn mills (Michell and Inca Tops) and Asociación Internacional de la Alpaca (AIA), reaffirming PAKA’s dedication to preserving Andean heritage and sustainable practices.
1% of PAKA’s revenue is donated to the communities where its products come from. Currently, one in three children living in the Andes mountains struggles with anemia due to the difficulty of growing nutrient-dense vegetables at 15,000 ft. PAKA is currently building greenhouses in an effort to improve access to nutrition—providing a variety of locally grown, iron-rich produce for the Alpaquero communities. Additionally, PAKA has financed university tuition for 17 young Peruvian women alone this year to empower education.
