Annual Recumbent Trike Festival Gathers Riders from Around the Country, the World

TerraTrike’s 4th annual RiderFest, July 29, celebrates a burgeoning niche of cycling

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (July 21, 2017) – Last year there were riders from the Netherlands, this year a group of six will travel all the way from Arkansas to Grand Rapids. TerraTrike’s annual RiderFest, a celebration of the recumbent tricycle and all who ride them, always attracts a crowd but this year might be the biggest yet.

“With more than 120 people already registered, and more expected on the day, we’re going to be recumbent force to be reckoned with – like a very laid-back army,” said Jeff Yonker, marketing director at TerraTrike.

The event kicks off on July 29, at 8 a.m., at Johnson Park in South Grand Rapids. Participants can ride either a 13-mile, flat, out-and-back ride or a more challenging 20-mile ride. Prizes for will be offered for best dressed, furthest travelled, youngest triker and others.

“I always love going up to Grand Rapids,” said Ben Jones, owner of Dogwood Junction Trike and Bike shop in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, who should be in contention for the furthest traveled prize. “It’s such a vibrant community of trikers.”

“Seeing RiderFest get bigger and bigger each year just really shines a light on the potential of the recumbent industry,” said Yonker.  “Once people realize how comfortable and fun trikes are, they become pretty darn committed. It’s hard to stop them travelling long distances just to be amongst other trikers.”

As North America’s largest trike manufacturer, TerraTrike has been manufacturing recumbent tricycles since 1996 when a couple of life-long friends met up and sketched a recumbent trike on a cocktail napkin. The now-famous napkin sits framed at the entrance to TerraTrike headquarters.

“Having a framed napkin is kind of funny, but it shows how far we’ve come,” said Yonker. “RiderFest is a great reminder, too.”
