Camping is headed in new directions, and they have the proof

May 27, 2022

Former Minnesotans Sarah Smith and Kevin Long have built a community — think Airbnb meets camping — with their popular app, the Dyrt. They’ve reported back on interesting trends.

About 8.3 million people camped for the first time nationally in 2021; 40% of  which were Black, Indigenous or people of color communities. It also reports that going remote isn’t going away: 23% of campers worked from a campsite in 2021, up from 16% pre-pandemic. And lastly, with demand comes supply issues — booking campsite vacancies has become three times harder since 2019. Star Tribune (Paywall)
