Duct Tape Then Beer Leads Kickstart Campaign to Raise $100K for Bears Ears Education Center
November 22, 2017
Seattle, WA (Nov. 22, 2017) – Duct Tape Then Beer, a small outdoor creative agency, today announced a Kickstarter campaign to raise $100,000 for a Bears Ears Education Center on behalf of Friends of Cedar Mesa, a 501(c)3 that works to ensure that the public lands in San Juan County, Utah, are respected and protected.
The status of Bears Ears National Monument remains in limbo. Despite the lack of clarity from the current administration, visitation and recreational use grew in the Bears Ears region over the last year and will continue to do so. The funding and additional resources that the Monument was supposed to receive to help protect the 1.3 million acres hasn’t materialized. At stake are 100,000+ incredible cultural sites — ruins and pictographs that form a living history for Southwest tribes — and a fragile desert landscape.
“Right now, the greater outdoor community is frustrated,” said Duct Tape Then Beer CEO Becca Cahall. “Now is the time to channel that frustration into something positive. They need a path to taking action that leads to clear results. We believe the Bears Ears Education Center is a novel approach to protecting public lands that may serve as a model moving forward.”
Places get loved to death. Educating visitors is the best way to protect the cultural and ecological resources.
Friends of Cedar Mesa is building an Education Center for Bears Ears to help address this problem. They’ve raised $230,000 and found a place they can purchase and remodel in Bluff, UT, but they need to raise another $100,000 by the end of year to close the deal. On November 22nd, Duct Tape Then Beer is launching a Kickstarter on behalf of Friends of Cedar Mesa to raise the remaining $100,000.
“We were happy to lead with a $5,000 donation and volunteer our time” said Cahall. “Our public lands are the backbone of our business. They are part of who we are as people. The situation demands more than hashtags and awareness raising.”
Duct Tape Then Beer is pleased to announce that many companies have signed on as supporters of this effort. Founding partners include: SnoCru, The North Face, Chaco, Osprey, Backbone Media, Outdoor Research, Peak Design, IDeology, Black Diamond, KEEN, Conservation Alliance, MSR, Thermarest, the Seattle / Austin / Minneapolis Bouldering Projects and Duct Tape Then Beer.
