Geartrade powers Jones Snowboards expansion of Re-Up™ program to include trade-in and resale

October 15, 2024

Expanded program will now fill the gap between recycling a dead board and buying a brand new one by offering snowboarders the chance to trade in or buy used, but still rideable boards.

Truckee, Calif. /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – Geartrade, the outdoor industry circularity engine, is partnering with Jones Snowboards in a broad expansion of their pioneering Re-Up™ recycling program to include snowboard trade-in and resale.

Jones first launched the Re-Up™program in October of 2023. The first-of-its-kind program employs Re-Up Tech, a groundbreaking new technology that allows Jones to recycle dead snowboards of any model or brand and use 95% of the materials to make new Jones boards. In less than a year since launching the Re-Up™program, Jones has recycled over 3000 retired boards collected from riders, dealers, and resorts.

This fall, Jones is building upon the Re-Up program with the introduction of a full-service trade-in and resale program powered by Geartrade. The expanded program will fill the gap between recycling a dead board and buying a brand new one by offering snowboarders the chance to trade in or buy used, but still rideable boards.

Snowboarders will be incentivized to trade in their used Jones boards with the offer of valuable credit toward the purchase of a new Jones board, and free shipping to send the board to Geartrade. The amount of credit awarded will be determined by the age, condition, and model of the Jones board that’s traded in. Boards received that are too damaged to re-sell will also receive a lesser credit and be recycled with Re-Up™Tech.

Based in Salt Lake City, close to some of the most populous communities of snowboarders in the western United States, Geartrade will support all the logistics and operational phases of the Re-Up program. They will handle the evaluation and refurbishment of incoming products, warehousing, fulfillment of resale orders and customer service for all Re-Up program participants.

“We knew the Re-Up program had incredible potential to keep snowboards out of the landfill and on the hill longer, but we struggled to manage the logistics of the program while focused on our primary business operations,“ said Jen McVey, General Manager of Nidecker Americas. “Geartrade stepped in with all the hardgoods resale experience we were missing. From refurbishing used boards, to developing the web interface and managing all Re-Up customer relationships, they have been impressively nimble and easy to work with.”

Geartrade supports a growing list of outdoor industry brands in their circularity efforts by creating resale systems uniquely applicable to hardgoods product categories including skis, snowboards, camping and fly fishing equipment. Using their wide ranging resale experience, Geartrade worked with Jones on the ideation and development of the expanded Re-Up program, creatively addressing their goals and needs, identifying operational efficiencies, and custom-designing all needed digital tools.

“Jones is the true innovator here. Geartrade is just providing the knowledge base, digital platform and real world muscle,” said Aaron Provine, President of Geartrade. “It has been a great experience to work closely with Jones on the expansion of the Re-Up program. When you’re aligned on the big picture goals from the first conversation, it’s easy to make progress.”

The new Geartrade powered Re-Up trade-in and resale program will only be open to Jones customers in the United States. Jones’ international dealer and distributor network will continue to offer snowboarders based outside the United States the opportunity to recycle their dead snowboards within the greater Re-Up recycling program. With over seven million active snowboarders in the United States alone, Jones and Geartrade are excited to launch the expanded program and help the industry improve its circularity while offering American riders a new option for upgrading their Jones gear, or experiencing the renowned performance of a Jones board for the first time at a great price.
