Leader in Global Seafood Builds on Success of Sustainability Programs
San Diego, Calif. (April 21, 2022) /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – As the global community celebrates Earth Day, King Oscar, the legendary Norwegian seafood producer, is proud to highlight its commitment to being a responsible business that have made the company a sustainability leader in the global seafood industry.
King Oscar understands that healthy oceans are essential to a healthy planet. That’s why the company remains committed to furthering its commitment to source from fisheries that are acting responsibly, and improving packaging and operation practices to reduce impact. Additionally, the company recognizes that caring for people translates into caring for the environment, which is why the company emphasizes safety, fairness and empowerment when it comes to its employees and the workers in their supply chain.
“We are serious about sustainability, from top to bottom,” said King Oscar USA president, John Engle. “That means ensuring we are working across a range of topics in our own operations and with our suppliers, such as full traceability to farm or vessel, fair wages and that safe working conditions are assured. Not only do we want to be sure that we endeavor to source from fisheries implementing best practices , but we also want to be intentional about the safety of the employees who work in the supply chains that we source from.”
In 2016, King Oscar’s parent company, Thai Union (TU), announced an important sustainability initiative known as SeaChange®. This global strategy covers every aspect of the seafood business: from looking after the oceans, to managing waste; from the responsibility Thai Union and its subsidiaries take for its workers as well as the employees of our industry partners, to building brighter futures for the communities around key sites.
A key enabler of Thai Union’s sustainability ambitions is the organization’s focus on traceability to ensure transparency that will enable the company to drive change working with suppliers and other key seafood actors. As a result, today King Oscar has the ability to trace products back to the originating vessel and which allows it to have visibility across all of the vessels that it sources from. As a part of Thai Union’s commitment to sustainable packaging, these products will have packaging that is 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable by 2025.
In 2023, Thai Union will announce a major update to SeaChange® with new goals and new commitments through to 2030. This will include actions across a wide range of topics to deliver against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and address issues such as the decline in biodiversity, addressing climate change, ensuring endangered species are protected, important ecosystems are restored and that natural resources both on land and below water are managed sustainably.
As part of Thai Union, King Oscar participates in the SeaChange efforts that have helped their parent company rank number one in the food industry on the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI), further validating the progress made under SeaChange®. The DJSI analysis awarded Thai Union top scores with regard to: Supply Chain Management, Human Rights, and Environmental Policy & Management Systems, amongst others.
King Oscar also contributes to Thai Union’s number one ranking on the World Benchmarking Alliance’s Seafood Stewardship Index for Sustainability.
