Sun Valley, ID, USA – March 23, 2025 /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – The excitement was electric in Sun Valley as the Women’s Super G officially launched the Stifel Sun Valley Finals. Athletes took on the meticulously prepared Challenger course, a thigh-burning 1,829 meters (6,001 feet) of technical turns, with a 650-meter (2,132-foot) vertical drop, featuring sections of the downhill course like the Frontier Jump and Cowboy’s Corner.

Lindsey Vonn made an unforgettable return to the World Cup podium, capturing an emotional second-place finish on home soil at Sun Valley. Coming more than six years since her last World Cup podium – third in Super G at the World Cup Finals in Are, Sweden on March 15, 2018 – the American ski legend thrilled the crowd with a fearless, charging run, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:13.64 (+1.29). Her remarkable comeback added another incredible chapter to her storied career.

“I had a chance to go for it today, and that’s what I did,” said Vonn. “I literally gave every single last ounce of energy that I had, it’s the last race of the season, at home no less, I had to deplete the gas tanks. I could barely breathe at the end.”

Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami ultimately claimed the first-place spot with a flawless run and a time of 1:12.35, adding a sixth Super G Crystal Globe to her collection. After being awarded the Downhill Crystal Globe yesterday, Italy’s Federica Brignone secured third in 1:13.68, rounding out a world-class podium.

“I was just skiing but not enjoying what I was doing, I was struggling a lot and always finding problems and not solutions,” said Gut-Behrami, reflecting on her season. “But since I’ve been here, I love the mountain and I love the slope and I really enjoyed what I was doing.”

The Men’s Super G event was equally electrifying, with Lukas Fuerstein of Austria delivering a dominant performance to clinch the title. Clocking in at 1:10.96, he outpaced a strong field, including Raphael Haaser (AUT – 1:11.15) and Franjo Von Allmen (SUI – 1:11.38), demonstrating exceptional technique and fearless skiing through the Sun Valley course’s steep drops and high-speed sections.

The overall cup standings culminated in Gut-Behrami (SUI) taking home the Crystal Globe, followed by Federica Brignone (ITA) and Sofia Goggia (ITA) for the season. On the men’s side, Switzerland’s Marco Odermaat continued his domination, taking home the overall Crystal Globe for Super G, marking his spot as the first man since 2014 to win three Super G globes in a row. He is followed by Stefan Rogantin (SUI) and Vincent Kreichmayr (AUT) in second and third place respectively.

The Sun Valley Super G course proved to be both challenging and rewarding, with athletes pushing their limits on the demanding technical terrain. Fans and spectators witnessed a thrilling competition, with tight margins and impressive recoveries highlighting the race.
