SCARPA launches Maestrale Re-Made, a performance ski boot made from manufacturing scraps

Highlighting its efforts to use more sustainable materials, SCARPA creates a high-performing polymer from ski boot production leftovers.
BOULDER, Colo. (Dec. 6, 2022) /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – SCARPA, a global leader in footwear for mountain sports, this month launched a version of its well-known Maestrale alpine-touring ski boot made entirely from production scraps saved from its ski-boot manufacturing operation.
The launch of the new, limited-edition Maestrale Re-Made follows on the heels of extensive efforts by SCARPA in recent years to increase the use of more sustainable and recycled-content materials in its products, including the launch of a fully biodegradable shoe in 2021.
The Maestrale Re-Made ski mountaineering boot became available in recent weeks in select locations throughout SCARPA’s worldwide retail network, including via SCARPA North America, with 2022 pairs available globally.
The Maestrale Re-Made is manufactured using a cutting-edge polymer derived from roughly three tons of manufacturing scraps that SCARPA has painstakingly recovered after it began storing and cataloging its ski boot production waste in 1995. Creating a pair of Maestrale Re-Made boots emits 27 percent less carbon dioxide than the production process involved in creating a regular pair Maestrale boot from Pebax Rnew, which itself is a plant-based material that emits 32 percent less carbon dioxide than fossil-based plastics. The design and entire manufacturing process behind the Re-Made boot were developed by SCARPA’s Green Lab, the production department dedicated to testing sustainable materials and production processes.
“After launching the Mojito Bio in 2021, our first shoe certified as 100 percent biodegradable, and other products made with sustainability in mind, today we are taking another major step towards reducing the environmental impact of footwear production,” said SCARPA President Sandro Parisotto. “Our secret of cataloging and neatly storing production scraps has enabled us to create — more than 25 years later — the Maestrale Re-Made, a boot that, while more eco-friendly than its iconic, brand-signature predecessor, maintains the same exceptional performance and quality. The launch of this new boot is part of a series of steps detailed in the Green Manifesto, a fundamental document that has enabled us to put the company’s sustainable principles down on paper and put them in practice through new initiatives aimed at ensuring that SCARPA’s business activities meet the highest international standards. This programme represents a very important commitment, as it will guide us forward for the foreseeable future.”
Alongside the launch of the Maestrale Re-Made, SCARPA has begun partnering with Protect Our Winters Europe. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the new boot will go to this non-profit organization committed to protecting the environment and raising awareness of climate change. SCARPA North America already works to support POW’s work in the U.S.
“We are very proud of this partnership with SCARPA,” said Dan Yates, European Partnership Manager of Protect Our Winters Europe. “Our organization has partnerships with brands that not only have strong links to the outdoor- and mountain-sports communities, but are passionate and committed to reducing their environmental impact and being more eco-sustainable. POW helps outdoor-sports enthusiasts to protect the places they love from climate change: ours is a community of athletes, scientists, creative professionals and entrepreneurs who promote non-partisan policies aimed at protecting our world now and for future generations.”
The mountaineer Hervé Barmasse will act as ambassador for the Re-Made boot. He stars in a striking and spectacular video (LINK) that emphasizes important values like respecting nature and appreciating the mountains, challenging everyone to look after the surrounding environment.
In recent weeks, SCARPA, in its capacity as coordinator of a consortium of various international companies, launched the ‘Re-shoes’ project, the aim of which is to produce — in the coming years — a new high-quality shoe made from recycled used footwear. The initiative aims to provide an alternative, circular and sustainable solution to deal with shoes at the end of their life by implementing ethical recycling practices as the new standard for the footwear industry supply chain.
