Slugs, Skookumchuck and Stretch – Get Set for MEC’s Highly Anticipated Classics Collection Launch
July 27, 2023
Limited-edition homegrown designs inspired by wild places and an even wilder past.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (July 27, 2023) /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – Mountain Equipment Company (MEC), Canada’s Most Trusted Outdoor Retailer, is thrilled to announce the launch of its highly anticipated 2023 Classics Collection. Designed to cater to superfans and new enthusiasts, this year’s assortment brings together beloved favourites, including the legendary Rad Pants (with added stretch), head-to-toe looks, innovative recycled down insulation, and limited-edition colours and patterns that are sure to sell out fast.
This third capsule of the MEC Classics Collection draws inspiration from the summer 1990 catalogue and pays homage to the brand’s rich heritage and roots with a retro natural theme. While last year’s collection showcased bold and vibrant colourways, this year’s offering has a more natural and elevated look, which provides a timeless aesthetic that captures nostalgia and optimism.
“This is a celebration of our homegrown designs as well as the enduring passion of our superfans. We’re so excited to see it come to life,” said Sophie Laliberte, Director of Product Creation for MEC Label. “The collection not only pays tribute to our roots, but also reflects our commitment to creating modern, functional and stylish gear. Our aim was to create a sense of excitement for shared outdoor adventures — and that meant boosting iconic favourites with stretch fabric, introducing recycled performance down, and creating limited-edition prints inspired by places we love.”
The 2023 Classics Collection consists mainly of unisex products, with some men’s and women’s specific items and a youth line that’s sure to please the next generation outside. Iconic MEC Classic Rad Pants, perennial fan favourites, have received a huge upgrade in response to customer feedback: stretch fabric for improved comfort and mobility.
To complete the head-to-toe look, MEC introduces the Classic Rad Anorak, featuring colour combinations for mix and match or full bold all-one colour looks. One of the highlights of the collection is the Camp Poncho with the Coast Rapids print, inspired by an abstract image of the Skookumchuck Rapids on the Sunshine Coast, in BC that was featured on the cover of the 1990 MEC catalogue.
Sustainability remains at the core of the MEC Label team’s design and development process, and this collection marks a significant milestone with the introduction of RENU, Performance Recycled Down into product for the first time. The MEC Classic Bush Pilot Down Sweater features this innovative insulation, which reclaims down from duvets, sleeping bags and jackets to give it new life — this lowers the environmental footprint by keeping quality materials out of the landfill.
The summer 2023 MEC Classics Collection will be available for purchase on-line and in store starting on July 27. Given the high demand for limited edition releases, customers are encouraged to act swiftly to secure their preferred items. For media samples, please email jo.salamon@mec.ca.
