October 21, 2021
DURANGO, Colo. (Oct. 21, 2021) /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – Tailwind Nutrition athlete Harvey Lewis, 45, of Cincinnati, Ohio was the last man standing at the Big Dog Backyard Ultra in Bell Buckle, Tenn. earlier this week. Lewis completed a record breaking 85 laps and 354.16 miles over the course of three and a half days. Thirty-six athletes toed the start line last Saturday, attempting to outlast the competition.
Chris Robert’s of Kirkwood, Mo. was the second runner standing, who also broke the existing world record with 350 miles (84 laps). This is the third year in a row that a Tailwind athlete has won Big’s race, as Courtney Dauwalter won in 2020 and Maggie Guterl won in 2019. Tailwind athlete John Stocker from the United Kingdom was the world record holder until yesterday, having earlier this year run 337 miles (81 laps) at the Suffolk Backyard Ultra.
“Big’s” is a race with the tagline of “there is no finish.” Gary “Laz” Cantrell, the founder of the Barkley Marathons, created Big’s, which is considered to be one of the hardest races in the world. How it works is that runners complete a 4.167 mile loop every hour on the hour for as long as it takes until there is only one person left in the starting corral.
Courtney Dauwalter, who earlier this summer won the women’s division of the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) while setting a new course record, won Big’s in 2020, completing 68 laps. Maggie Guterl won Big’s in 2019, becoming the first woman to win in the race’s history, completing 60 laps. Other Tailwind Nutrition athletes that raced this year include Chris Murphy, from Australia who completed 41 laps, Katy Wright from New Zealand who completed 27 laps and Matthew Shepard of Canada who completed 31 laps. Maggie and Courtney each completed 42 laps this year, which equates to 175 miles.
These athletes will be utilizing Tailwind’s Recovery Mix, which is made up of carbs, complete protein, and electrolytes to help athletes feel stronger, faster and sooner. The Recovery mix is available in Vanilla, Chocolate, Salted Caramel and Caffeinated Coffee flavors.
