The JPB Foundation Awards Multi-Year Grant to PeopleForBikes to Support The Better Bike Share Partnership
August 25, 2020
BOULDER, CO (August 25, 2020) — The PeopleForBikes Foundation is pleased to announce the award of a three-year grant from The JPB Foundation to support the Better Bike Share Partnership (BBSP), a national collaboration focused on improving social and racial equity in shared micromobility systems across the U.S. The City of Philadelphia’s Office of Transportation, Infrastructure and Sustainability and the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) join PeopleForBikes as partners in this work.
This is the fourth grant to support the work of the Better Bike Share Partnership since its inception in 2014. This funding will support a new Living Lab program to help five cities nationwide address the significant barriers that prevent the use of shared micromobility systems in low income and BIPOC communities, as well as a fellowship initiative to support professional and network development for people of color in the transportation field. The PeopleForBikes Foundation will now manage the BBSP program, which was previously run by The Mayor’s Fund for Philadelphia.
“The Better Bike Share Partnership has been focused on equity and access in shared micromobility for six years,” said Zoe Kircos, director of grants + partnerships at the PeopleForBikes Foundation. “We are deeply grateful for the funding provided by The JPB Foundation that will allow us to continue that work.”
“It has been an honor working with the Better Bike Share Partnership team to support and expand equity and access throughout the shared micromobility space over the last six years,” said Waffiyyah Murray, program manager at the Office of Transportation, Infrastructure and Sustainability at the City of Philadelphia. “With the addition of the BBSP Fellowship program and expansion of Living Lab cities, we’ll be able to provide additional support and guidance to our growing BBSP network.”
“The Better Bike Share Partnership network has led the way in operationalizing equity in the shared micromobility field,” added Nicole Payne, program manager at NACTO. “Through the sharing of resources, best practices and lessons learned, we have been able to support the development of transportation systems that meaningfully addresses barriers to use for low-income areas and communities of color. We’re very grateful for the opportunity to continue this work towards equitable mobility for all.”
The Better Bike Share Partnership plans to roll out its newest initiatives this fall and will share updates and information on its new website at www.betterbikeshare.org.
