Two of LA’s 2028 Olympics events will now be hosted over 1,300 miles away

June 21, 2024

While Los Angeles Olympics boosters have long touted a “no build” process, meaning that no new, permanent arenas will be constructed for the games, an updated venue plan released shows that Southern California is not, in fact, fully capable of hosting every event. Two sports — softball and canoe slalom — will be held more than 1,300 miles east in Oklahoma City, according to the announcement from the 2028 LA Games on Friday.

According to the news release, the move is being done to align the 2028 Games with the International Olympic Committee’s new agenda recommendations, which “emphasizes sustainability” by encouraging hosts to use purpose-built facilities, even if outside of the main host region. SFG
