ViewRanger Showcases New Watch App During Apple Keynote
September 7, 2016
ViewRanger, the leading outdoors discovery app, today shared the stage with Apple to launch the new Apple Watch Series 2 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.
ViewRanger’s head of design, Hannah Catmur, was invited on stage by Apple chief operating officer Jeff Williams. Catmur demonstrated how the new ViewRanger app helps hikers find trails, navigate, and explore the outdoors using Apple Watch Series 2. ViewRanger is the first hiking app to use the new built-in GPS feature on Apple Watch Series 2.
Attendees of the event, plus a live online audience of millions of people around the world, were taken on a virtual hiking tour of Four Mile Trail in the Yosemite National Park, with ViewRanger providing turn-by-turn directions and highlighting key route features such as viewpoints and waterfalls.
ViewRanger has completely redesigned its watch app to take advantage of the improved capabilities of Apple Watch Series 2. It uses the GPS within the watch to pinpoint the wearer’s exact location, allowing them to navigate with the watch independently of the iPhone. Users get a discreet tap on the wrist when it’s time to make a turn, or when they reach interesting points. The ViewRanger app for Apple Watch Series 2 works with Apple Health, so personal activity rings fill up as users hike and walk.
“With a quick glance at the watch, ViewRanger users can see their GPS location on detailed maps, access route descriptions, and learn interesting facts about the landscape around them,” said Craig Wareham, ViewRanger co-founder and CEO.
In combination with the cutting-edge technology of the new Apple Watch Series 2, ViewRanger delivers hands-free route navigation directly to outdoor enthusiasts without the need to pull out their iPhones. Plus, the new watch will instantly link into ViewRanger’s time-tested mapping technology and active outdoor community.
“This new watch app is the latest in a line of innovations that ViewRanger has brought to the outdoors market – and we’re not finished yet,” Wareham added. “Our team is currently completing our breakthrough augmented reality technology that will allow people to explore the world like never before.”
ViewRanger works offline without mobile or data signals, making it the ideal app for anyone exploring the outdoors using Apple’s new devices.
