Writer and veteran joins organization providing fly fishing trips for men with cancer
NEEDHAM, MA /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – Reel Recovery is proud to announce Steve Ramirez, an author, Marine Corps veteran and educator, has joined our national board of directors. Ramirez lives in the Texas Hill Country and is a popular book and magazine writer.
“Anyone who knows me or has read any of my books or published essays knows that my life has been a series of life changing struggles that once overcome have always lead to growth and enrichment in my ability to live authentically, urgently, mindfully, empathetically, and with an enduring sense of gratitude,” Ramirez said about why he wanted to join the Reel Recovery board. “Reel Recovery is a natural fit for me and my life’s focus on helping to increase awareness of the healing powers of fly fishing and positive connections with nature. I am honored to be a new member of the Reel Recovery team.”
Ramirez focuses on conservation and fly-fishing in his writing, and usually finds a way to touch on the human experience that happens while in the outdoors with angling partners. His work has appeared in Fly Fisherman Magazine, Fly Fisherman, Trout Magazine, The Flyfish Journal, American Angler, Tail Magazine, Hallowed Waters Journal, and Under Wild Skies.
His first book, Casting Forward – Fishing Tales from the Texas Hill Country, was featured in the recent film Mending the Line. His second book, Casting Onward – Fishing Adventures in Search of America’s Native Gamefish is an important work of outdoor adventure and conservation literature. Casting Seaward, the third book in the Lyons Press Series was released this spring.
“When you spend time on the water with someone, you get to know them in ways you can’t in other places. After fishing with Steve for several days I knew I had to ask if he would be interested in joining our efforts to support men with cancer by providing free fly-fishing retreats and support groups,” said Brett Prettyman, chair of the Reel Recovery board. “His heart is so big I knew he would say yes. I know he will dedicate his energy to making our organization everything it can be and continuing to do it for our participants, their families, and our communities, like we have for the past 20 years.”
Ramirez joins Prettyman (Utah), Greg Driscoll (New Hampshire) and Travis Swartz (Idaho) on the board along with Reel Recovery Executive Director Stan Golub (Massachusetts).
