Better Trail launches, offering a fresh and sustainable take on outdoor gear

December 5, 2024

/OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – Better Trail, a new website that launched in November, is reimagining how outdoor enthusiasts research gear. By highlighting the sustainability metrics of every product and providing a cutting-edge user experience, Better Trail’s primary goal is to help outdoorists buy better and consume less. The concept was dreamt up and co-founded by David Wilkinson, John Ellings, and Jenny Abegg, the team who successfully built Switchback Travel from the ground up before it was acquired in 2020.

“We are excited to be boots on the ground working on great content,” said Wilkinson. “We believe in what we are creating, and the appetite for a modernized outdoor gear research experience and real sustainability information is there. The site is forward looking and being built for the next decade.”

In the coming months, Better Trail will significantly expand its outdoor gear coverage by adding a number of new product categories in hiking, backpacking, camping, and more. In early 2025, the site will launch a sustainability portal that will greatly enhance its coverage and features in this arena. Last but not least, Better Trail offers a growing hub of information, analysis, and reporting dedicated to public lands, which are vital to outdoor recreation and communities around the country.

“I hear it all the time at the crag, on the trail, and around the campfire: We outdoor enthusiasts are starting to wake up to the reality of our impact,” said Jenny Abegg. “Sure, having the newest, coolest outdoor gear is fun, but at what cost? Our mindset is shifting to finding versatile gear that can be used across activities, and prioritizing durable, well-built products that will stay in rotation for decades. I get so jazzed when I think about Better Trail being a hub for this movement, providing a way forward—helping our readers buy better and consume less.”
