Fischer announces livestream backcountry safety sessions in partnership with the American Avalanche Institute
November 30, 2020
AUBURN, NH — Fischer Sports, in partnership with the American Avalanche Institute (AAI), announces a series of livestream events for backcountry awareness hosted by US Alpine Product Manager for Fischer Skis and AMGA-certified guide Mike Hattrup and AAI co-owner and AMGA-certified guide Sarah Carpenter. The livestream events will occur on three consecutive Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m., MST: Nov. 24, Dec. 1, Dec. 8, 2020.
Topics will include how to transition from lift-accessed skiing to backcountry skiing as well as content geared toward those who already frequent the backcountry. Hattrup and Carpenter will give recommendations for gear as well as present information about terrain, avalanches and rescue protocol. Each show will be between 30 and 45 minutes, with allotted time for a question-and-answer with Carpenter and Hattrup at the end of each session.
“Avalanche awareness is a critical component to backcountry travel and naturally garners the most attention,” explains Hattrup. “I’m looking forward to discussing some of the more overlooked skill sets required for safe and efficient backcountry travel: tour planning, route finding, track setting and preparedness.”
Also covered will be discussions on how to interpret forecasts and understand avalanche problems as well as gear prep and navigation.
“I’m excited about this program because it’s winter again and it’s time to get our heads back into thinking about snow,” says Carpenter. “The goal of this three-part program is to meet people where they’re at and help them find resources that will improve their knowledge and skills for traveling in the backcountry.”
