Women Highlight Changing Attitudes in Outdoor Media with Outdoor Project’s Women in the Wild 2018
July 31, 2018
Interviews with over 60 women leaders explore inspiration, leadership and the dynamic role of women in the outdoors
PORTLAND, OREGON (July 31, 2018) – Outdoor adventure and travel media platform Outdoor Project—found online at outdoorproject.com—publicly shared the growing excitement generated from the launch of Women in the Wild 2018. Outdoor Project recognizes that outdoor media can do more to share women’s perspectives on the outdoors and the businesses that surround outdoor recreation, and Women in the Wild is inspiring Outdoor Project’s community in unprecedented ways by featuring interviews with women who find their passion in outdoor pursuits.
Brittany Greer is a Colorado-based mountain biker, educator and guide, and her interview on Outdoor Project for Women in the Wild caught the attention of her sponsors. Working with Outdoor Project, Pearl Izumi, Deuter, Clifbar, and Wilderness Trail Bikes, Brittany launched a giveaway contest through Instagram to bring her story to a bigger audience, connecting more women to the joy of mountain biking.
“When I first heard about Women in the Wild, a campaign to celebrate outdoor women from all walks of life, I instantly gravitated towards its mission,” said Brittany. “To ignite, inspire and empower the hearts of women to get outside…how could I not be excited to be a part of that? I truly believe Women in the Wild has the power to do just that, and anything I can do to help that mission is a worthy endeavor!”
Brittany’s story is just one of the many that have been published in the three weeks since launching Women in the Wild 2018. The interview series includes a diverse array of women sharing their perspectives on the growing women’s outdoor movement. Jenny Bruso of Unlikely Hikers, Jolie Varela of Indigenous Women Hike, and Dani Burt, a champion adaptive surfer, are just a few of the voices involved. Jenny Bruso, founder of Unlikely Hikers, added: “Outdoor Project caught my eye a long time ago with their prominent display of women doing cool, inspiring things. So often on these platforms, the first images are of men and then you have to dig a little. With their Women in the Wild series, they are unapologetically bringing women to the front, and I’m excited to be a part of these amazing voices.”
From these interviews, several additional women have reached out and offered to share their stories and perspectives. Outdoor Project will feature many of these women on its platform in the coming months. Outdoor Project will also launch two 2018 Women in the Wild Giveaways that connect inspiring stories with gear and destination prize packages from sponsors including OluKai, KEEN, and Mountain Hardwear.
“Women in the Wild isn’t a campaign; it’s a mission,” said Outdoor Project’s Katherine Jondro. “We all benefit from hearing perspectives that are being left out of ambassador programs, full-page advertising spreads, and other prevailing outdoor media coverage, especially if it means empowering more people to get outside. Women in the Wild is part of a larger effort to build an inclusive and welcoming outdoor community for everyone.”
